Mount Everest is the Himalayan peak with the highest elevation above sea level, standing on the border between Nepal and China's Tibet region.
Mount Everest is the highest point on Earth when measured by elevation above sea level. The peak rises in the Himalaya on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Nepal recognizes the name Sagarmatha, while the Tibetan name is Chomolungma.
The mountain reaches an officially agreed elevation of 8,848.86 meters, commonly rounded to 8,849 meters. Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa mountaineer, made the first confirmed ascent of the summit on May 29, 1953.
