Why yes-or-no questions narrow possibilities

A useful yes-or-no question divides the remaining possibilities into groups. “Is it living?” separates living subjects from objects, places, events, and many scientific subjects. Once the answer is known, an entire branch can be set aside.

Broad questions are usually most useful near the beginning because they can remove many possibilities at once. Later questions should test narrower properties suggested by the earlier answers. This creates a chain in which every new question responds to the evidence already collected.

Evidence can support certainty or probability

Deductive reasoning asks what must follow if the premises are true. If every remaining candidate except one conflicts with a confirmed clue, the surviving candidate follows from the stated set. The result is only as reliable as the premises and the completeness of the candidate set.

Inductive reasoning uses observations to form a likely conclusion. Several clues may make one answer seem much more plausible without proving it. Mystery games often combine both approaches: patterns suggest a promising candidate, while direct clues and elimination test whether it truly fits.
