Common category mistakes and overconfident language

Reasoning is easily misclassified when people focus only on the topic or the direction of the statements. The limits of a three-part comparison

Deduction, induction, and abduction provide a useful framework for comparing familiar forms of inference, but they do not settle every question about how reasoning should be classified. Philosophers and other researchers have proposed different accounts of argument, evidence, explanation, probability, analogy, and practical decision-making.

Real reasoning may also combine methods. A player can abductively propose a candidate, deductively derive what should be true if that candidate is correct, and then use further observations to assess the prediction. The labels are most useful when they clarify what the evidence actually supports.
