How to Ask Better Yes-or-No Questions

Better yes-or-no questions test one clear, objective property and fit the clues already collected. Begin with broad distinctions, narrow progressively, and avoid repeating information. Some subjects cannot be described accurately with only Yes or No, so useful play also recognizes Sometimes and Not Applicable. Not Appropriate identifies a question that should not be used.

A strong question creates a useful division

A yes-or-no question is useful when its answer changes which possibilities remain. Near the start of a mystery, the best question often separates large groups, such as living from nonliving or natural from human-made. Later, a narrower question can distinguish the few candidates that still fit.

A question does not need to produce Yes to be valuable. A clear No can remove an entire branch of possibilities. Before asking, consider what each possible response would tell you and whether it would affect your next move.

Begin broad and narrow progressively

Broad opening questions establish the kind of subject you are investigating. In a mixed answer pool, questions about whether the subject is living, physical, human-made, a place, or fictional can remove many possibilities at once.

Once a broad fact is known, stop asking questions at that level. Move to categories, subgroups, functions, regions, habitats, time periods, or other defining properties. Progressive narrowing prevents early turns from being spent on details that apply to only one unlikely candidate.

Ask about one property at a time

A compound question joins two or more properties, often with words such as and or or. If the answer keeper says No to “Is it old and made of stone?”, you cannot tell whether the subject is not old, not stone, or neither. The response does not create a clean clue.

Split compound questions into separate turns. Although this may appear slower, each answer becomes precise and can be combined reliably with the rest of the clue trail.

Prefer objective properties over subjective descriptions

Objective questions refer to properties that can be checked consistently, such as location, function, material, date, habitat, or whether a subject is living. Subjective descriptions depend on personal judgment and may produce disagreement rather than a dependable clue.

Replace words such as beautiful, scary, important, large, old, or expensive with a measurable or clearly defined comparison whenever possible. The replacement does not need a number, but the standard should be understandable.

Use the full response model accurately

Real subjects do not always fit a forced binary description. Is It This? can respond with Yes, No, Sometimes, Not Applicable, or Not Appropriate. These responses preserve distinctions that would be lost if every question had to receive only Yes or No.

Sometimes means the property varies, applies only in certain conditions, or describes part of the subject rather than all of it. Not Applicable means the question does not meaningfully fit the hidden subject. Not Appropriate signals that the question should not be used in the game, rather than supplying a clue about the answer.

Avoid questions likely to produce Sometimes

Sometimes is an accurate and necessary response, but a question that predictably invites it may not narrow the mystery much. Questions using words such as usually, often, can, found, popular, or used may hide variations in behavior, time, location, or design.

Improve the question by adding a condition, defining the main case, or asking about a stable property. Do not force a binary answer when the real-world fact varies. The goal is clearer wording, not artificial certainty.

Do not repeat an established clue

Repeated questions consume a turn without changing the evidence. Repetition can be exact, such as asking “Is it alive?” after “Is it living?”, or indirect, such as asking “Was it built by people?” after learning that it is human-made.

Keep a short clue record and translate each answer into a plain statement. Before submitting the next question, check whether that statement is already known or follows directly from an earlier clue.

  • Known: it is fictional. Do not ask whether the person existed historically.

Recover when a line of questioning stops helping

A clue trail can stall when several questions focus on properties shared by nearly every remaining candidate, or when you have pursued a category that no longer fits. Recovery begins by reviewing the complete record rather than asking another similar question.

Name a few candidates that still satisfy every clue. Then find a property on which those candidates differ. If you cannot name any candidates, step back to a broader unresolved distinction such as function, region, habitat, time period, or natural versus human-made.

  • Stop extending a line that keeps producing Sometimes or Not Applicable.
  • Recheck whether an early assumption was ever confirmed.
  • Compare at least two plausible candidates instead of thinking about only one.
  • Switch dimensions: from appearance to function, from size to habitat, or from fame to time period.
  • Use a broad reset question when the category remains uncertain.

Weak questions and stronger rewrites

Rewriting a weak question means identifying the intended distinction and expressing it as one objective property. The strongest rewrite may be broader or more precise than the original, depending on the stage of the mystery.

The examples below are representative rather than universal. A narrow question can become excellent late in a round when only two candidates remain, while the same question would be wasteful at the beginning.

  • Weak: “Is it nice?” Stronger: ask about a public role, function, behavior, or design purpose.
  • Weak: “Is it big?” Stronger: provide a comparison standard.
  • Weak: “Is it old and in Europe?” Stronger: test one of those properties first.
